Getting to Glasgow’s West End

Hillhead Subway Station is located at the midpoint of Byres Road and is the closest stop to the University of Glasgow main campus. Kelvinhall is right at the very bottom of Byres Road, allowing you easy access to the whole area without having to worry about parking. A return ticket from anywhere in Glasgow is £3.20 and it takes approximately 10 minutes to travel to the West End from the city centre. Unlimited travel on the subway for one day will cost you £4.10.

Park & Ride is available at Bridge Street, Kelvinbridge and Shields Road stations, allowing you to park your car all day and get a return journey on the subway for only £5.40.

The subway runs from 06.30 to 23.40 from Monday to Saturday and from 10.00 to 18.12 on Sundays. Trains run every 4 minutes during peak times and every 6-8 minutes during off-peak. See the SPT website for further information.

Several buses pass the top end and bottom end of Byres Road. Consult Traveline Scotland’s Journey Planner for a full list of services. Buses generally run later than the subway and allow you to travel beyond central Glasgow.

Bus numbers 4 and 4A run through the West End of Glasgow passing through Hyndland, to the University of Glasgow, and into the city centre. PDF versions of the timetables for this service can be found here.

Bus numbers 6 and 6A travel along Great Western Road, via Anniesland and the Botanic Gardens, and into the city centre. PDF versions of the timetables for this service can be found here.

Bus number 77 runs from Glasgow International Airport and into the city centre via Partick Bus Station and Charing Cross. This bus passes in front of Kelvin Hall and the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery. PDF versions of the timetables for this service can be found here.

The closest train stations are Hyndland and Partick. You can walk from Partick train station to the bottom of Byres Road in about 10 minutes. ScotRail can provide you with train times. If you are getting a train that will arrive at Glasgow Central or Glasgow Queen Street, the Buchanan subway station is just a short walk from both stations. The subway will take you to the West End within approximately 10 minutes.

Black cabs can be flagged on the street or reserved by calling Glasgow Taxis on +44 (0) 141 429 7070. (Note that there is a black cab taxi rank outside Hillhead subway Station on Byres Road.) Alternatively, you can call Network Private Hire on 0141 557 1110.

There are several metered car parks in the Byres Road area. At the University of Glasgow there is limited parking available on campus, so you may wish to plan for an alternative transport option.

Glasgow City Council has information on their website detailing cycle routes, parking and other helpful advice for those who are navigating around Glasgow via bicycle.
